COMMUNITY
In service of our family of weavers.
Our community is our backbone with whom we have built Obeetee over the past 100 years. It is our vision to improve the quality of life and achieve inclusive growth for everyone associated with us.
As a testament to this, Obeetee is the first company in the handmade rug industry to secure the prestigious SA 8000 standard - the most recognised global benchmark for human rights in the workplace.

Education
On location at Guria school with the students

1

Project Mala

We help provide education to 460 children from across 15 villages through our work with Project Mala, helping to reshape the future for many families.

3,528 children have enrolled over the last 30 years. During the last 5 years, 4 children have won places to study in Foremarke Hall, UK for one year, while 1 student is pursuing M.Sc. (Math) from IIT, Kanpur.

2

Women’s Weavers
initiative

Started in 2015, this programme provides vocational training for women in rural Uttar Pradesh. As an equal opportunities employer, we are reshaping the traditional role of women in villages. We have trained over 1200 individuals since the program’s inception.

3

Collaboration with
Pratham

Pratham is one of India’s largest non-governmental innovative learning organisations. Our collaboration aims to improve learning in the Bhadohi district of Uttar Pradesh via instructional work in schools and by engaging the community. This has benefited over 14,446 children to date.

OBEETEE - HEALTH, SANITATION & WELL-BEING

Health, Sanitation & Well-Being

* We regularly organise medical camps in weavers’ villages to support the health of the local community.
* Gopepur is a small village of 163 families, most of whom weave or farm for a living. 90% of the villagers do not have toilets. We partnered with Sulabh International to build 125 toilets in the village and provide clean water and sanitisation.
* We have installed 60 solar street lights — a low cost, self-sustaining way to develop the village

OBEETEE - Fairtrade Facility

Fairtrade Facility

To comply with Fairtrade requirements, Obeetee has created the Raj Carpet Facility - in Saripur Village, Bhadohi. It houses 50 looms and 50 weavers.

This is for exporters who require that the carpets be Fairtrade certified. 2% of the proceeds from these carpets is given back to our weavers in the form of rewards.

865 of the 1136 women trained under the Women’s Weavers initiative have made weaving their profession. Support their handiwork by shopping from our
Empress Collection
