From the corridors of royalty to haute couture boudoirs, Obeetee’s is an
illustrious legacy that is far from being confined to the glories of its past
– the future for us, is always the only way forward.
“Carpets are works of art. Weaving them is one of the ancient crafts for which
India is so rightly famous and carpet manufacturing put money where it’s most
needed - into the villages of India,” commented Sir Mark Tully, former Bureau
Chief, BBC, New Delhi in his narration of the documentary, Rugs for Life, that
traces Obeetee’s history & efforts in innovation & development. And this is precisely
the cornerstone of Obeetee’s legacy.
Shortly after World War 1, three British gentlemen named FH Oakley, FH Bowden
& JAL Taylor gathered the finest local craftsmen in Mirzapur under the banner,
Obeetee. From this town, renowned for its spectacular carpets, deep in the heartland
of India, they took the artistry of Indian rug-making to the rest of the world.
In doing so, Obeetee grew to be the largest manufacturer of rugs from India & in
turn became the most reliable source of income for over 20,000 highly-skilled
weavers. With many of them fifth & sixth generation weavers working from their
own looms or homes, our structure ensures that their agrarian roots are not
neglected. Not required to choose one over the other, our weavers are in a unique
position to reap the benefits of both their skill and their fertile lands. Earning enough
to keep from leaving their villages, the nuances of carpet-weaving continue to be
passed down to the next generation that looks to the future with weaving on their
minds.
